Obtaining a PASSPORT: The dreaded chore…

My experience and pro tips!

The first thing you need in hand before vacationing is PASSPORTS. As a family of 6, I pushed this off for as long as I could. But 2022 was the year I wanted to really travel! So, we gathered all documents and we did it! And I wanted to document our process to help put your mind at ease because in the end, it wasnt even that bad. We actually were pleasantly surprised!

DAY 0: Appt made online for 1/24/22 at closest post office.

(PRO TIP: you can modify appointment anytime with ease). I wanted to do this to ensure we had everything we needed. I was prepared with all documents for myself and children.

DAY 1: All documents and pictures were furnished

(PRO TIP: IF you are getting pictures done elsewhere, check for hair covering eyes. 2 of my children had to retake at the post office since the corner of their eyes had slightly been covered).

Appointment was complete fairly quickly, less than 15 min per person. Yes you can do this on your own but having the person at the post office making sure it was all in order was so HELPFUL, and it assured us we had everything we needed and it was already being tracked and in their hands!

DAY 14: All passports arrived!

DAY 21: All passport cards arrived!

DAY 23: All documents (B.C, MARRIAGE, and old passports arrived)

The 2 week turnaround with passports in hand was really a pleasant surprise. And the part where our documents came back last did make us a little worried, but it all came back safely. We debated if we wanted our kids to get the passport cards, but it was only $10 more for a legal identification and 2 older children would eventually need it soon. So it was a nice peace of mind to just have. So I highly recommend it.

Tell Congress to Advance the Deployment of the Vaccine to the Philippines

I know many people have been affected by the ongoing travel restrictions imposed by the Philippine government due to the surging cases which continues to plague our country. We all have family, friends and reasons to go home, however hospitalization rates are up and we are on the brink of concern. We need your help to advocate and push for the quick response of the Moderna vaccine to be deployed to the Philippines. The Philippine government has signed an agreement with Moderna for 20M vaccinations which will help our country resume normalcy for the economy and for our people.

We are asking for your participation in writing to your elected officials to help our cause.

By writing letters to Congress to authorize and expedite the deployment of the vaccine we can help so many Filipinos deal with the affects of the pandemic. The original target for distribution was June -July, but we are hoping with your help, we can have those vaccines by the end of April.

Thank you for your support and please pray for the Philippines.

Legislators rely on letters to find out what constituents and advocacy organizations are thinking. Letters can play an important role in establishing a relationship with a legislator, explaining an organization’s policy position, and eliciting a response from the Member of Congress.

On March 16, 2021 The Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases released a memorandum circular temporarily suspending the travel into the Philippines of Foreigners and returning overseas Filipinos (ROFs) who are non-overseas Filipino workers (non-OFWSs).

This includes any Filipino who is not a Philippine national or dual citizen and those under the Balikbayan program.

On March 15, 2021, the Philippines recorded 5,404 new COIVD positive cases, which is the highest report of positive cases in the last 6 months. Unfortunately, the transmission of the virus has spread due to noncompliance to public safety measures which includes public gatherings, the movements of persons and the delay of detection and isolation of infected patients.

In addition, a new Philippine variant of the COVID virus has been detected and a press release was issued by the DOH which was issued on March 13. Also included in the report was 59 new positive cases for UK Variant, 32 cases of the South African variant and 1 case of the Brazilian case.

To contain and control the emerging cases, all agencies were directed to limit the number of inbound international passengers/ arrivals to only 1,500 a day and to temporarily suspend the entry of Foreign nationals and returning overseas Filipinos who are not OFWs. All Airlines have been closely monitoring the situation and are currently adjusting their flight schedules to adhere to the mandate.

This mandate will begin on March 20 ^th and will be upheld until April 19 ^th , 2021.

Exclusions of the mandate are:

Holders of 9(c) visas
Medical repatriations and their escorts duly endorsed by the DFA-Office if the Undersecretary for Migrant Workers Affairs
Distressed returning Overseas Filipinos duly endorsed by the DFA
AND Emergency, humanitarian and other similar cases approved by the NTF-COVID 19

The Consulate General has advised that there may be more upcoming updates regarding the suspension for Philippine nationals. Although the mandate has been imposed, there are concerns about the legality of not allowing Philippine citizens to enter the country.

What is the Balikbayan Program for the Philippines?

The program allows visa-free entry to the Philippines for a period of one (1) year for foreign passport holders, with the exception of restricted nationals. It also includes a kabuhayan shopping privilege allowing tax-exempt purchase of livelihood tools and providing the opportunity to avail of the necessary training to enable the balikbayan to become economically self-reliant members of society upon their return to the country. The program also intends to showcase competitive and outstanding Filipino-made products.

Who are considered Balikbayans?

A Filipino citizen who has been continuously out of the Philippines for a period of at least one (1) year
A Filipino overseas worker

The Balikbayan Program also extends to immediate family members (spouse and children) of the Balikbayan, who are nationals of one of the countries above, and travelling together with the Balikbayan. The program allows visa-free entry into the Philippines and visa-free stay or a period of one (1) year for Balikbayans who are former Filipinos and/or the immediate family of Balikbayans who are from the above countries.

How can I I avail of the Balikbayan Program?

Former Filipino nationals who wish to avail of the program must present proof of former Philippine citizenship such as old Philippine passport or Philippine birth certificate upon arrival at any Philippine Port of Entry. In cases that their spouses and minor children travel together with them, they must present the following:

Old Philippine passport or Philippine birth certificate for the key claimant;
Marriage certificate for the spouse;
Birth certificate for the child; and,
Foreign passport with a validity of at least six (6) months beyond the intended stay in the Philippines.

Accompanying family members of the Balikbayan should bring appropriate supporting documents:

For the spouse: copy of marriage certificate
For each child: copy of birth certificate
For adopted children: copy of adoption papers

According to the Bureau of Immigration, the Balikbayan Privilege can be availed of by the foreign member of a balikbayan’s family EVERY TIME they enter the Philippines with the balikbayan (former Filipino/dual citizen) and not only once a year.

Former Filipinos and or their immediate family who are nationals of countries not found on the above list will need to secure a visa before going to the Philippines.

What are the benefits under the Balikbayan Program?

(a) Travel Tax exemption;

(b) Visa-free entry to the Philippines for a period of one (1) year, for a foreign passport holder;

(c) Duty-Free shopping privilege of up to US$2,000.00 (US$1000.00 as arriving Balikbayan and US$1000.00 as arriving passenger) provided that:

(i) Shopping must be done within two days upon arrival;

(ii) Duty free shopping privilege can be availed of only once a year; and

(iii) Purchases must be made personally by the Balikbayan.

Those who are admitted as Balikbayans are given an initial stay of one (1) year. They may extend their stay for another one (1), two (2) or six (6) months provided that they present their valid passport and filled out the visa extension form and submit it to the Visa Extension Section in the BI Main Office or any BI Offices nationwide. An additional requirement will be ask for Balikbayans who have stayed in the Philippines after thirty six (36) months.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are foreign spouses and children of Filipino nationals who are not traveling with their Filipino spouses and/or children still allowed entry so long as they apply for the appropriate Philippine visa?

Answer: Yes. Foreign spouses and minor children not traveling with the Filipino principal will be allowed entry to the Philippines as long as they obtain visas, pursuant to FSC 36-2020 and FSC 42-2020. The Filipino principal should be in the Philippines

Are foreign spouses and children who have no visa-free privileges still required to apply for visas even if they are traveling with their Filipino spouse or parent?

Answer: Yes. Foreign spouses and children who are not visa-free under E.O. 408 should obtain visas even if they are traveling with the Filipino principal.

Are foreign minor children of Filipino nationals who will rejoin their Filipino parents in the Philippines required to apply for visas, as opposed to adult foreign children traveling with their Filipino parents but are no longer required to apply for visas?

Answer: Yes. Foreign minor children rejoining their Filipino parents in the Philippines need to obtain visas prior to their travel into the country. Adult foreign children, on the other hand, traveling with their Filipino parents may enter visa-free if they are eligible under EO 408.

How long can the balikbayan and their foreign legal spouse and children stay in the Philippines?

Answer: They shall be admitted with one-year validity of stay from the date of arrival.

Do foreign children of Filipino parents refer to unmarried children only? Or does it also cover married children?

Answer: Balikbayan privileges cover both married and unmarried foreign children of Filipinos or former Filipinos.

For balikbayans who are unable to present old Philippine passports or birth certificates, will they be allowed entry just by showing in their foreign passport that their place of birth is the Philippines?

Answer: They shall be asked to present the following: 1) Copy of previously issued or expired PH Passport 2) Copy of birth certificate 3) Previous immigration arrival stamp with Balikbayan status

Do marriage certificates and birth certificates issued by foreign governments need to be apostilled or authenticated?

Answer: Yes. Documentary proof issued by foreign governments needs to be apostilled or authenticated as previously requested by the BI.

For those who are dual citizens by birth (e.g. born in the US to Filipino parents), are they considered balikbayans and would therefore only need to present a copy of their Report of Birth (ROB) to be allowed entry? Will the Bureau of Immigration accept the ROB as proof of Filipino citizenship?

Answer: The BI requires the presentation of the Identification Certificate, valid Philippine Passport, or Certificate of Re-acquisition and Retention from dual citizens, per its SBM-2014- 045 dated 30 September 2014. Children who are dual citizens may be issued a travel document with the Report of Birth as an attachment. They should present a Philippine passport upon exit from the country.

Updated: Modified Step-by-Step Arrival and Quarantine Procedures Entering the Philippines (Dec 30 – Jan 15)

Here are the most updated arrival procedures for entering the Philippines.

BEFORE YOU FLY AND DURING CHECK-IN

1. As early as 3 days prior to your departure, register and accomplish the Electronic Case Investigation Form and save the confirmation e-mail and QR code at https://bit.ly/MNLPHRedCrosseCIF

2. For land-based OFWs, create/update your account on the OFW Assistance Information System (OASIS) at http://oasis.owwa.gov.ph/

3. Upon check-in, sign the Declaration and Waiver Form presented by our check-in agent, indicating that you are healthy and fit to travel.

DURING THE FLIGHT

4. Accomplish the Health Declaration Form and Arrival Card.

WHEN YOU ARRIVE

5. Upon arrival, listen to the briefing conducted by the Philippine Coast Guard.

6. Undergo a temperature check, submit the Health Declaration Form upon deplaning, and proceed to the designated waiting area. For OFWs, fill out the Project Care Slip.

7. Wait for your turn to proceed to the verification and barcoding booth.

8. Present the QR code sent to you after accomplishing the e-CIF.

9. You will be given six (6) barcode stickers. One (1) barcode sticker will be placed on the back of your passport.

10. Proceed to the Swab Test booth and hand the remaining five (5) barcode stickers to the tester. 11. Undergo the COVID-19 RT-PCR Test for free.

12. Help Desks are available at the waiting area for passengers who do not have smart devices/phones. Charging stations are also available.

13. Clear with immigration and submit the Arrival Card.

14. Proceed to your respective desks for your quarantine hotel assignment:

For non-OFWs proceed to the DOT desk. You will be assigned a quarantine facility for free designated by the Philippine government. Depending on room availability, you may be assigned at the following quarantine facilities/hotels:

o NCR: Nice Hotel Monumento, Chill Hotel Monumento, Nice Hotel Arayat, Nice Hotel Mac Arthur
o Region IV-A: Canyon Woods, Canyon Cove, Chateau Royal, Summit Ridge
o Region 3: Apollonia Hotel

If you do not wish to stay at your assigned hotel, you can choose your own accredited hotel suitable for stringent quarantine and at your own expense, including your transportation from the airport to the hotel. Click here for the list of accredited hotels suitable for stringent quarantine .

After arranging your hotel and transportation, fill out the Affidavit of Undertaking and ensure that this has been signed or stamped by the hotel verifier.
Note: Hotels suitable for stringent quarantine are designated facilities to those travelers coming from high-risk areas or vessels as identified by WHO, and those who exhibit flu-like symptoms as identified by the health officer at the airport. These are different from hotels suitable only for mandatory quarantine.

For land-based OFWs and your dependents, proceed to the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) Desk. Present the same QR code from the e-CIF and submit the OWWA Project Care Slip.
For sea-based OFWs and your dependents, proceed to the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) Desk.

15. Claim your baggage at the designated carousel and clear with Customs Check.

16. Exit the terminal and wait for your shuttle/bus that will take you to your assigned hotel. If you chose your own hotel, submit the Affidavit of Undertaking before exiting the terminal. You must also arrange for your own transportation.

AT THE QUARANTINE HOTEL

17. Check in at your hotel and wait for the release of your test results. For those who tested negative, it will be sent by the Philippine Red Cross to the e-mail address you have provided when you registered. The timings on release of test results are not definite and may be shortened or extended.

18. Your accommodation and food during your stay will be shouldered by the Philippine government, unless you chose and arranged your own hotel and transportation.

GOING HOME

19. If you test positive , the BOQ shall contact and transfer you to a designated facility/hospital for further medical management.

If you test negative , For passengers originating from the listed countries: COMPLETE YOUR 14-DAY MANDATORY HOTEL QUARANTINE before clearance.

Once completed, present your test result together with your medical certificate to the assigned quarantine personnel at your hotel.

For passengers transiting through the listed countries: Present your test result together with your medical certificate to the assigned quarantine personnel at your hotel.

Please complete your 14-day quarantine at home. For a hard copy of your certificate, printing services will be available at your hotel.

When flying it is important that you maintain healthy habits to avoid catching any unwanted disease or bacteria. Here are a few tips to alleviate the stress of flying.

DRESS COMFORTABLY

Make sure you wear comfy clothing that does not constrict blood flow. Try using stretchy or loose pants. Wear clothes that can be layered in case of temperature changes from aircraft to airport. Invest in compression socks to battle deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

STAY HYDRATED

Drink plenty of water in order to stay hydrated. Avoid alcoholic drinks when flying. Lower oxygen levels and increased pressure can cause accelerated effects like light headedness, dysphoria and aggressive behavior. For every hour you are flying, drink at least 250ml of water. Cabin pressure and dry, recirculated air can drain moisture from your skin, but drinking plenty of water will help you look fresh and alive once deplaning.

TIP: Chop up some carrots, celery, cucumbers and beets and store them in a zip-lock bag for quick snacks. Dried fruit, energy bars and unsalted nuts are great for traveling.

SANITIZE YOUR AREA

The number of people who travel on a plane can reach the hundreds in a short period of time and lots of bacteria can be passed on. Ensuring that your personal area is clean can greatly reduce your risk. Always carry sanitizer or portable wipes to disinfect your tray table, armrests, seat belt and seat.

GET YOUR SLEEP

Flying takes a toll on your body and it is very important that you get enough rest before traveling. Sleep deprivation can weaken your immune system and can make you more prone for diseases. Make sure to pack early and prepare all of your belongings to avoid late night free-for-all.

How to Prepare for Your Summer Vacation

The sun is out and it’s that time of the year when we all can’t wait to leave the house and stay out all summer. Day trips, outdoor adventures or even an oversea vacation – we all have been pent up through the winter and just can’t wait to be free.

As you make your plans it is important to be prepared to avoid any health and safety risks. Here are a few tips to help you prepare for those long-awaited trips and to keep you and your family safe.

BEING PROACTIVE

Find out details about your destination – Do some research about the places you plan to visit and acquaint yourself with new and important health risks. If you are traveling abroad, make sure to check travel.state.gov or https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel , for vital information about required vaccinations, travel advisories and possible diseases.

Get a check-up – It is always recommended that you pay a visit to your health provider and get a routine check-up before you travel. Make sure you are in tip-top shape and that you are up to date on vaccinations like measles and influenza.

Prepare a first aid kit – Make sure to pack an emergency travel kit that holds important prescriptions and medicines that you may need while traveling. Pack basic supplies like bandages, alcohol, hot/cold compresses and gauze. Don’t forget to pack a copy of your health insurance card as well.

Be SMART – If you are planning a trip oversees, make sure to register with the US Embassy or Consulate through the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to get the latest updates and alerts before and during your trip. This also helps the U.S. Embassy contact you in an emergency, whether natural disaster, civil unrest, or a family emergency.

Prepare for the unexpected – Make copies of your travel plans and documents with a family member and/or upload them to a cloud-based storage system in case you lose them while traveling. Verify that your health insurance covers medical care abroad – most plans don’t, so be sure to get travel insurance. Travel insurance covers health and medical expenses while offering a wide variety of additional services like travel delay, lost baggage and lost passport service.

WHILE TRAVELING

Be careful what you eat and drink – Always make sure you know how your food is handled. Contaminated food or drinks are the easiest way to spread diseases which can cause traveler’s diarrhea.

Always eat food that is cooked through and served hot.
Always drink bottled water, sodas and drinks that are sealed.
Eat fruits and vegetables that are washed with safe water and that you have peeled yourself.
Avoid ice that is made with tap water.

Protect yourself from the sun – Double check that your sunscreen is at least SPF 30 to protect yourself from harmful UV rays. I always recommend Blue Lizard, which is a mineral based sunscreen that uses natural ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. Read the label and reapply as needed.

Prevent insect bites – Always use insect repellents especially in developing countries to prevent you from serious diseases. Use an EPA-registered insect repellant with one of the following ingredients: DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus, para-menthane-diol, or 2-undecanone.

Always buckle up and choose safe transportation – Nearly half of medical evacuations back to the United States are the result of a car crash, and a medical evacuation can cost upward of $100,000.

Don’t ride motorcycles. If you must, make sure to wear a helmet.
Avoid overcrowded, overweight, or top-heavy buses or vans
Be alert when crossing the street. Know local traffic laws to avoid collisions.
Always wear a seat belt and lock your doors.

AFTER YOU RETURN

Keep a close eye on your health – Symptoms can arise after you return home, so make sure to watch yourself closely. If you begin to feel ill, see a doctor immediately and inform your doctor where you have been and what you did during your trip. This will help your doctor when giving you a diagnosis of possible infections from other countries.

A Weekend in Hong Kong

Whether you are fortunate to have an extended layover in Hong Kong or are embarking a cruise from its ship port, with its delectable cuisine and massive number of skyscrapers, intertwined with the ancient and modern China, you can cover much of the city in a short period of time and stay within whatever budget you might have. The great thing is that Hong Kong allows visa-free entry from over 150 countries from 7 days to 3 months; check with your local embassy to see if your country is one of these and how long of stay you are allowed. Also, even though the first language is Chinese (Cantonese to be exact), the second official language is English, which makes it very easy to communicate and explore the city. The street signs and directions are also translated to English as well as Chinese character. Unlike mainland China, the internet is not censored so you can stay in touch via social media as you will and use other commonly used applications such as Google Maps to help you get around.

The most important decisions to make when traveling to Hong Kong is hotel accommodations. You can choose from the downtown area (also known as Hong Kong Island) or stay across the Victoria Harbour on the landlocked portion called Kowloon. Staying on the island can be pricey, but you will be in the heart of the city. Hong Kong Island is known for being the historic and economic center of the city.

If you are looking for a more authentic experience, try staying in Kowloon. You will have the best view of the iconic skyline and enjoy the nightly Symphony of Lights show. Kowloon is also known for luxury shopping, parks and hip new neighborhoods. If you are on a budget or in transit to a cruise ship, Kowloon is must!

Getting around Hong Kong is fairly easy with alternate options by taxi, railways, and trams. Regardless of where you stay, Hong Kong’s vast railway system can get you practically anywhere, you can get from the airport to downtown in 30 minutes. You can find discounted tickets online to save some time and money, and send them to your smartphone for boarding. Taxis are readily available, which are all metered, clean, and fairly affordable. NOTE: Hong Kong drivers tend to all drive fast to get you to your destination (which isn’t always a bad thing)! Be careful not to confuse the tram and subway routes because they have similar routes in certain parts of the city.

If time permits, you can make your way to Stanley Market, where you can find anything from little hand-made trinkets to top-shelf electronics. A must-see attraction for souvenirs as well as anything else you might be in the market to buy. Finish your day by enjoying a nightly light show on the city’s skyscrapers glamorously lit up at night. Since 2004, the Symphony of Light has become the signature icon for Hong Kong, showcasing the vibrancy and glamour of this international city.

There is never enough time to see all that a city has to offer however if you are tight on time a lot can be accomplished during a quick trip to Hong Kong. Purchase a day tour or half day tour to see some of the city’s iconic sites to maximize your time. If you are flexible and willing to venture out on your own, it is very easy to plan your own itinerary, but keep in mind some of the places are not as close as you think. Save yourself some time and money by booking things in advance but leave some room for spontaneity.

Cathay Pacific Announces Non-Stop Service from Washington D.C.

Washington D.C. has added a new airline to Southeast Asia. Starting September 16, 2018 – Cathay Pacific will begin non-stop service four times a week from Washington Dulles to Hong Kong. This route would be the longest in Cathay Pacific’s network and originating from the Washington Dulles airport.

With the addition of this IAD-HKG route, Filipinos will now have several options to choose from. Options include nonstop from IAD to Seoul (ICN) operated by Korean Airlines; Tokyo (NRT) operated by ANA and United; and Beijing (PEK), operated by Air China.

“Cathay Pacific’s new service between Washington DC and Hong Kong continues to improve the diversity of choice [and] worldwide connectivity at Dulles International Airport,” says Mike Stewart, manager of Dulles airport at the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA).

This flight will be operated by one of Cathay Pacific’s brand-new Airbus A350-1000s which will feature a three-class cabin comprising of a revamped Business class, a Premium Economy and Economy class seating. The wide body, twin-aisle Airbus A350-1000 delivers a feeling of spaciousness wherever you look, with wider seats, high ceilings and alluring ambient lighting.

Cathay Pacific has created the perfect environment to enjoy flying your long-haul flight to Hong Kong with the highest possible air quality with optimized cabin altitude (6000 ft), temperature and humidity, with the air being renewed every two to three minutes. Passengers can relax knowing that they will arrive feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.

The redesigned cabin will feature next level sleeping experiences, the best entertainment and even more controls for passengers to enjoy their flight. Every class will benefit from more space and comfort, panoramic windows and mood lighting contributing to overall experience.

Downtown Dubai – Here you can see the trifecta of Dubai: The Dubai Mall, Burj Khalifa and the Dubai Fountains. If you didn’t already know, Dubai Mall is the largest mall in the world by total area. With a plethora of 1,200 retailers/shops this is a shopper’s paradise. Another world breaking record is the Burj Khalifa, which takes home the world’s tallest building award. Standing at 2,722 ft, its been named the tallest structure since 2008. And, what else goes better next to the world’s largest mall and world’s tallest building than the World’s tallest performing fountain system, the Dubai Fountains. How to Judge a Great Travel Bargain

Being a savvy shopper is important to get the best value for your money. But with every “great” deal it is important that you understand what exactly you are buying. There are tons of retailers like Groupon and LivingSocial apps which offer super discounted travel packages for unbelievable prices, but avoid these common pitfalls to avoid being scammed or disappointed.

If you have been offered a great bargain on a cruise or a resort vacation, but you cannot seem to get all the details unless you pay the company first, you may be dealing with a travel scam. Typically, a scam operator won’t give you full and complete information in writing until after you’ve given them a credit card number, certified check or money order. Once you do get further information, there will be restrictions and conditions which make it more expensive, or even impossible, to take your trip.

While getting a refund is sometimes possible, it’s better to avoid paying anything in the first place. While there is the remote chance that you might miss a legitimate deal, chances are you will save yourself some time and money in the long run.

To help you avoid becoming a victim of a travel scam, here are some suggestions when evaluating travel offers:

Stay away from travel offers that sound “too good to be true”, particularly if you have been solicited by phone or have received a postcard or certificate in the mail.
Never give your credit card number or any information about your bank accounts over the phone to a solicitor unless you initiate the transaction or call. You should feel confident about the company with which you are doing business with.
Get the complete details in writing about any trip prior to payment. These details should include the total cost (including taxes, port charges, service fees, and surcharges), terms and conditions, restrictions, cancellation penalties, if any, and specific information about all components of the package.
Walk away from high-pressure sales presentations which don’t allow you time to evaluate the offer or which require that you disclose your income.
Be cautious with companies which require that you wait at least 60 days to take you trip or require that you select several dates of departure for your trip.

Scammers will find ways to contact you through direct mail, social media or enticing emails luring you for an “unbelievable” promotion. In reality, these types of vacations often end up with poorly disclosed fees or fake. Here are the most common travel scams that we hear about.

You just won a “free vacation”, but must pay a fee first

If you can’t remember how you were able to win a prize, most likely this is a scam. Make sure you understand all charges and fees associated with the prize. Often these awards are attached to a variety of fees, participation in a tour/ vacation club or seminars with pressure filled presentations. Find out all the details before you commit.

When the caller wants your credit card number

Scammers will always try to lead the conversation and pressure you to hand over your credit card. Make sure to receive paperwork before you do. TIP: Most scams require you to make rash decisions quickly. Grab their phone number and say you feel comfortable if you can call them back. Most scam artists prefer not to give any information about themselves.

They entice you with general descriptive words — but can’t — give you specifics

They promise a stay at a “five-star” resort or a cruise on a “luxury” ship, however they cannot tell you exactly which property or cruise line. Make sure that you know all the details before anything else happens. Make sure to always get it in writing to protect yourself. TIP: Find out the hotel’s address and check out their website for reviews and photos.

You’re pressured to sign up for a travel club that requires you to sell their memberships

As soon as you hear that you must sign up with monthly dues – run out the door. Travel clubs often have high membership fees and limited choice of destinations or travel dates.

You get an automated call

Automated calls from companies trying to sell you something is a big red flag. Sign up for the national Do Not Call Registry ( https://www.donotcall.gov/) to avoid future solicitation.

Travel Tip: Never Wait in Line for Re-entry into the U.S. Again

After your long international flight back to the U.S., the very next thing you see is another long line as you wait to be processed. Sometimes you can get lucky and if you run fast enough, you can beat the rush and you are out within minutes. The introduction of the Automated Passport Control (APC) has also sped up the process by reducing the wait times by half. And now, we have Global Entry which is another expedited clearance for pre-approved, low-risk travelers upon arrival in the United States for a small price.

But one of the newest travel hacks is the new app: Mobile Passport, which gets your through immigration within minutes!

Mobile Passport Control enables travelers to submit their passport and customs declaration information via their smartphone instead of the traditional paper form. The “Mobile Passport” app is free to download and free to use. The app is sponsored by the Airports Council International-North America and Boeing and authorized by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

Wi-Fi or a cellular network are required to submit information and receive a receipt. U.S. citizens with a valid U.S. passport and Canadian citizens with both a valid Canadian passport and B1 or B2 visa status may use the Mobile Passport App.

Once the traveler downloads the app from the app store, it only takes 4 simple steps and you’re done.

STEP 1: Set up Your Profile
Enter your profile information as it appears on your valid, official passport. You can set up profiles for your entire family. Your information will be encrypted and shared only with CBP.

STEP 2: Answer a Few Questions
Answer CBP’s five brief questions about your trip. Then carefully review ALL of your information for the trip.

STEP 3: Submit to CBP
Once you are at your port of entry (airport or sea port), connect to wireless or wi-fi and submit your data to CBP. Remember: when you submit, you are confirming under penalty of law that your information is correct. Within a few seconds, you will receive a CBP receipt with an encrypted barcode. Your receipt will be valid for 4 hours.

STEP 4: Breeze Through Custom and Save Time!
Follow the Mobile Passport Control signs to the designated Mobile Passport Control line. Show your passport to the CBP officer and scan the barcode on the CBP receipt. And that’s it!

How to Travel with a Toddler?

You’re ready and all prepared for that highly anticipated family vacation and you know you have everything on your checklist. You have managed to bring all of the necessary items like pre-packed snacks, extra sets of clothes, wipes and diapers and you have just passed security without any issues. Now, you’ve boarded your plane and stashed your carry-ons away. Your child(ren) start fidgeting with the seat belts and arm rests and you slowly realize that this is where your patience will truly be tested. As you

Fly during nap time

This may not be the most affordable, but if you are on a longer haul flight, it is recommended that you try to schedule a flight during your child’s nap time. If you can coordinate an agreeable time, at least you only have to deal with half of the flight.

Give them expectations

No one likes to be put in a situation where they do not know what going on, and that includes your little people. I bought several books about airplanes and flying to read to them at night a couple days before the trip. This helped him understand what an airport is and how cool it is to fly in an airplane. We brought the book on the day of our flight, and he was so excited to follow the book as we went through the daily routine.

Burn excess energy before the flight

Have you ever seen your child sit still because if you have, please tell me your secret. As for the thousands of parents who haven’t, well don’t hold your breath. Kids are full of energy and they can’t help but let it out. Plan to arrive to the airport early so you kids can adjust. Have them help push the carts, go up escalators and if available, in the play areas. The more energy they burn, the more sanity you will have when you arrive at your final destination.

Be first or last

This next tip is debatable and I have spoken to a few parents who listed the pros of cons of each. If you board first, you’ll be able to board the plane without waiting and can put your carry-ons without fighting for space. If you decide to board last, your child will have less time be cooped up on a plane. Decide what works for you and your family.

Eat snacks at take-off and landings

I see a lot of parents miss this one, but it can save you some tears. Eating snacks during landing and take-offs help with the changing of air pressure.

Grab some coloring books or toys

Head down to Target or the Dollar Store and grab some quick toys or coloring books to brign with your on the flight. Having activities for them will help break up the time. I normally try to bring flash cards, stickers and games to preoccupy their time.

Flight attendants can be your friend

Get friendly with our flight attendant as soon as your board and they can save you a ton of stress. Talk to them early and you can have them bring snacks drinks early to avoid a meltdown. If the flight isn’t too full, sometimes they even take them up and down the airplane and show them all of the cool gadgets.

Bring a scarf

Planes are usually cold, so it’s smart to bring something to cover your child in case they get chilly. It also helps to wipe up messes quickly. Sorry Mom – it’s had to be prepared and chic at the same time.

Go, go, gadgets

As much as we hate giving up our gadgets, if you need a few minutes (sometime more, who’s counting) it’s okay to hand them a brief stint on the phone. Try to download interactive apps that can help them read, count or even o simple math problems.

Keep calm and just go with it

Let’s be honest, no matter how much you prepare, there is always a chance of a meltdown. You tried to be as considerate as possible, but some things are just meant to be. Just take a deep breath and rest assured that this flight is only getting shorter. Relax and enjoy the ride.

If you’re a night owl, then you need to try a Norwegian cruise which has a variety of themed bars and venues. You’ll be able to enjoy sipping mojitos at Sugarcane’s Mojito Bar and then head down to Fat Cats Jazz Club and groove to the best jazz and blues at sea. Norwegian’s signature White and Glow parties however are where all the action is. Are Frequent Flyer programs still worth it?

As the airlines continue to find new ways to create revenue, it is equally important that people realize the truth about airline loyalty programs.

In 2014, Delta led a charge that revolutionized the way you were awarded miles. The new calculation is based on the ticket price rather than the miles flown, a move that privileges first and business class travelers opposed to those in economy. The shift towards revenue-based loyalty programs have now become the norm and earning miles are now trickier than ever. Are loyalty programs over? No, but you do need to consider a different approach.

It is true that flying is no longer the best way to earn miles, but how can you take advantage of these programs?

Your Home Airline

When you decide which frequent flyer program to choose, consider which airline services your closest airport. Earning miles through air travel will be the easiest way to build especially if you choose an airline within an alliance like oneworld (American| Asiana) or SkyTeam (Delta| Korean). For example, if you live near the Northern Virginia area, Washington Dulles Airport would be your closest airport. It is almost certain that most of your flights over time would travel on United. Why? Because Dulles is United’s hub or one of its main connecting gateways and many flights will pass through here.

By considering the number of times you would travel, from a statistical view, the logical choice for our example would be to choose a program with United or one of its partners in the Star Alliance such as All Nippon, Air China or Air Canada.
Credit Card Programs

If you are a frequent spender, then it would be smart to earn while you spend by applying for an airline sponsored credit card. Having the right credit card is essential to travel – and it is not only to earn miles. Even if you can’t earn your way to a free ticket, you can at least get some of the free amenities benefited by credit card holders. All domestic carriers offer free checked bags, priority boarding, and in some cases, complimentary lounge access. Paying annual fees can be quite expensive, however for $100 a year, some of the lower priced programs pay themselves off after a few trips.

Consider the point value system in which you can earn points for every dollar spent, this way you can spend your way to free ticket. Check out which credit card programs offer the most points earned for qualified expenses such as gas, groceries and other purchases. One of my favorite credit cards for travel is the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card which offer double points for travel purchases and offers a 50,000 bonus points with qualified purchases ($625 value).
Just Buy your Miles

The newest and arguably the best way to take advantage of airline loyalty programs is to buy miles. Periodically throughout the year, airlines will dump miles at a discounted rate. In some cases, you can even use credit card rewards to buy miles, which is even better. Although this seems great, buying miles is not for everyone.

Buying miles is most advantageous when redeeming for premium seats like first or business class. You would need to calculate how many points you need in comparison to the true value of the ticket before you buy.

The downside for loyal airline passengers is that the world will be filled with discounted miles in which the airlines continue to devalue your miles earned. You do not earn as many miles like before while the price for redemption continues to rise. This trend will make using miles even more difficult in the future.

Frequent flyer programs are not what they were before. No longer are the days you can earn miles while sitting on a plane and count your way to a free ticket. But loyalty programs are not dead, you just need to plan ahead.

When is the Magical Day to Purchase Airfare?

When it comes to travel many people say that there is a magical day when airfare drops and becomes even more affordable. The thought sounds amazing. A magical day in the year when airfare drops and you can get the best fares. This is a popular belief among travelers especially for trans-pacific flights. Every year, passengers ask me, “When doe the fares drop?”.

But there is more than just a magical date.

Typically, from mid-August to the End of November, airlines often release lower fares compared to those in the summer months, however there is no set magic date. On the contrary, the shift in seasons is due in large part because many students are back in school and there is less demand.

While many people believe that cheap fares can just “pop up”, the truth is, prices are based on the number of seats available at the time you purchase your tickets. The higher in demand, the higher the price, however as passengers’ book, cancel and reissue their itineraries, these seats go in and out of the inventory. Once a seat is returned into inventory, it is first-come, first served, hence why it seems like “magic”.

In addition to availability, the day of the week you depart and return matters as well. Mid-week flights are often 15 to 30 percent lower than weekend flights depending on their routes. In fact, smart travelers will often purchase their tickets 4-6 months in advance for international travel. The so called “day” should reference the date of departure opposed to the date of purchase.

For the best fares, possible – set your dates right after the holidays for instance the time between Thanksgiving and mid-December. During these times, you will see a significant dip in prices since demand is low.

Another recent trend to find cheaper fares are taking advantages of the stopover programs during your connecting city for instance in Dubai, Beijing or Doha. If passengers can delay their arrival for 1-2 days, they will be able to save money and explore another destination.

There is no exact formula or specific date that airlines pinpoint to release discounted fares. Pricing is calculated by market trends and demand which occurs seasonally. If you are visiting the Pacific Northwest of the United States, or commonly referred to as “PNW”, then a visit to Vancouver, British Columbia is a must. For the simple fact that Vancouver is only less than a 3-hour drive from the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, a country full of beautiful sights, fresh seafood, and Hollywood movie sets awaits any traveler.

Here are 5 reasons why you should plan on visiting Vancouver:

Nature

Upon arrival, take a deep breath and enjoy the clean, crisp, fresh air that Vancouver must offer due to the vast amount of forestry and fresh water. No matter where you look, you will have mountains or a body of water in sight, sometimes even both!

If you are not in the mood or do not have time to hike your way around Vancouver, there are tons of places with wide-open views of Vancouver’s finest wilderness. Simply driving along, the coastline or from your hotel to your next destination, you will want to pull over left and right for a photo op. The observable mountain range from Vancouver is the North Shore Mountains, which consist of several mountains. Grouse, Cypress, and Seymour mountains are the most visible from Vancouver and offer year-round activities from skiing to zip lining.

There are also plenty of trails suitable for all ages and experiences. Another place to visit if you are looking for a casual trail with beautiful sights is Lynn Canyon Park, located less than a 30-minute drive northeast of the city. They have several trails and photo ops around every corner. You will still be able to see the vibrant array of colors and enjoy the outdoors while getting your daily steps in.

Food

You will notice in Vancouver that there are all sorts of foreign influenced cuisine options so you can try something different every meal. From Japanese to Mexican, Italian to the local Canadian-born dishes, there will certainly be a place to satisfy your taste buds. Also, let’s not forget about the super fresh seafood that comes straight from the Pacific Northwest.

A popular side dish in Vancouver

So where do you start? If you’re not from Canada or have never tried, I would highly recommend ordering poutine, which is a plate of fries covered in gravy and cheese curds. You can find this dish in many places, some even having their own variation of the famous dish such as adding proteins and truffle. As good as it is, make sure you save room to experience the other dishes found in Vancouver.

Another must in Vancouver, even for the locals, is sushi. Having some of the freshest seafood and constant inspiration from Asian cuisine, whether you prefer the raw taste of sashimi or fancy overly packed rolls, you won’t have a problem fulfilling your sushi craving in Vancouver.

Sightseeing/Attractions

When you’ve had enough of the sea level experience in Vancouver, you are ready to take one of the many mountainside gondolas for even greater sights. Lated less than an hour drive north, Sea to Sky Gondola take you straight up the mountain and offers spectacular sights of all the mountains around. Once you reach the top after about a 10-minute gondola ride, you will have the opportunity to cross one of Vancouver’s popular suspension bridges built right on the mountain. There are also several viewing platforms for that perfect photo and hiking trails at the top. The admission price is around $35.00 USD per adult, but your admission allows you unlimited time on top of the mountain to take in the views, hike a trail or two, and grab a bite to eat at the summit’s restaurant.

Breath-taking views year-round

If seeing Vancouver from a top down view isn’t for you, but you still want to experience the nerve racking thrill of crossing a suspension bridge, there are plenty of options. Besides the suspension bridge on top of the Sea to Sky Gondola ride, there is the Capilano Suspension Bridge, which has a fee, and the Lynn Canyon Suspension Bridge, which is free of cost. Both bridges are located inside national parks, which also offer hiking and walking trails to indulge yourself in Vancouver’s wildlife.

Another popular place to visit is Stanley Park, which is located northwest of the city and almost surrounded by water. Here, you will find many attractions such as the Vancouver Aquarium, several walking and hiking trails, a water park, and even a beach. The most common trail is the Seawall, which borders Stanley Park and provides 14 miles of paths suitable for walking, running, or biking. There are also trails that pass-through Stanley Park’s forests, which can be significantly less crowded.

Movie sets

One of the little-known facts about Vancouver is that several parts of the beautiful country are used for filming mainstream movies and TV shows. Referred to as “Hollywood North” since Vancouver is directly north of Hollywood, California, and is an ideal set location offering a variety of scenery, Vancouver contains some of the largest production studios and stages in North America.

There are several places known for filming in Vancouver such as the Hotel Europe in the city of Gastown, the Riverview Hospital, and the Brittania Mine Museum. Some of the most known movie productions include: Godzilla , Fifty Shades of Grey , Deadpool , and some of the Twilight saga installments.

You might find yourself on a Hollywood movie set or even better, run into your favorite movie star grabbing a bite to eat downtown! Rumor has it, celebrities are consistently spotted all over town.

People

One of the most recognizable and appreciated things about Vancouver is the people, also commonly referred to as “Vancouverites”. English, being the primary language spoken also makes it easy to communicate and get around. Vancouverites are all extremely friendly and polite, welcoming people from all over the world to their beautiful land. From the customer service at your local restaurant to asking a stranger on the road for directions, everyone always seems willing to help and keep a smile on your face. Never once did I feel unsafe or unwelcomed during my visit there and I hope you are able to experience this sort of Canadian hospitality as well!

To sum things up, whether you are a foodie looking for the next unique meal, an adventurist looking for a challenging hike through the woods, or an amateur photo journalist trying to capture the perfect landscape shot of the North Shore Mountains, Vancouver is the place for you. I recommend doing adequate research when planning your trip to ensure you pack the right clothes (and gear) for the weather, and that you figure out what you would like to accomplish and see during your trip. How to apply for a Philippine visa

After making up your mind that you want to visit the Philippines, you will need to decide how long you intend to stay. As mentioned in the previous article, a US citizen does not need to obtain a visa if they plan on staying for less than 30 days. If you plan to stay for more than 30 days, you can apply for a temporary visitor’s visa. Visas are issued in 3,6 and 12 month durations.

In order to apply for a temporary visitor’s visa, you will need to make sure you have the required items before submitting your application. First and foremost, you need to double check that your passport expiration date is at least 6 months valid from the return date. For example, if you are planning to travel to the Philippines from March 1 ^st to April 30 ^th (which is a 2 month stay), your passport expiration date should be no sooner than October 31 ^st .

Once you’ve figured out your travel dates and have your itinerary, make sure to keep a copy to submit with your application. You can download and complete the ‘ Non-Immigrant Visa ’ application form from the Philippines Embassy website. This form must be filled out, written or typed in either black or blue ink. Please note that the form must be notarized if you are submitting your application by mail.

Along with the application, you will also need to provide a 2”x 2” photo taken within 6 months. Similar to a passport photo, the photo needs to be a clear front view of the person applying with a white background. The photo also can’t be taken with sleeveless attire, blurry or low quality. You can usually have this done at your local pharmacy or grocery store.

When you have all the required items, you are ready to submit your application along with the required items to the Philippine Embassy either by mail or by visiting the Consular Services. If you are sending by mail, you will need to include your passport, application, 2 x 2 photo, financial support or letter from employer, self-addressed and pre-paid return envelope, and visa fee.

At the time of this article, the cost of visas are as follows: $30.00 for a single entry visa valid for 3 months, $60.00 for a multiple entry visa valid for 6 months, and $90.00 for a multiple entry visa valid for 12 months. The fee must be paid in cash or money order made payable to “Embassy of Philippines”. Please note that personal checks and credit cards are not accepted.

If you decide to go to the embassy in person, the physical address in the D.C. area is 1600 Massachusetts Ave NW, Washington, D.C. 20036 of in New York – 556 Fifth Avenue, New York, NY 10036 (between 45th and 46th streets). Once your documents have been received and verified, make sure to keep your receipt. You will need to present your receipt if you plan to pick up your passport. Expected processing for visas is between 30-60 days.

A Beginner’s Guide to Rome

To say the least, Rome is one of the most iconic and most traveled cities in the world. About 14 million people travel to the Eternal City annually to enjoy the famous architecture, savor authentic Italian pasta and cuisine and of course shop for fine Italian made clothing and products. No matter what type of traveler you are, there is always something for you in Rome.

Romans are the friendliest people in Italy due in large to their relaxed but cosmopolitan lifestyle. Socializing and leisure time are highly regarded and you find many locals are captured by the magic of possibility, in which anything can happen in Rome.

Here are some tips for your next adventure in Rome.

Getting There

Nonstop train from Leonardo Airport to Termini Station

Since Rome is the most popular destination, there are tons of flights arriving and departing Leonardo Da Vinci Airport daily. If you are coming from the U.S., you will most likely arrive in the morning before lunch which allows you to enjoy more of your time in Rome. I would suggest taking an American Airlines flight which has nonstop flights from Philadelphia, Chicago, New York, Miami and Charlotte. I find having my connecting flights still in the US more comforting especially since customer service in Europe is not so hospitable.

Once you arrive in Rome, the immigration and custom processes are very quick and you are out of the airport within 30-45 minutes. Collect your bags and proceed towards the Leonardo Express (Trentitalia) which runs every 15-20 minutes non-stop to downtown Rome. The cost per person is 14 Euros ($15USD), for children 4-14 years old the cost is free. In a matter of 30 minutes you will arrive in Termini Station and can proceed to your accommodations to relax before you explore the city.

Where to stay

When choosing where to stay in Rome, the first question you need to ask is what you are willing to spend. Rome is filled with tons of hotels throughout the city to accommodate all the foreigners with different amenities and services. Location plays a major factor in pricing and the closer your hotel is to major landmarks, expect to pay top dollar.

For those looking for something with elegance and style, check out Grand Hotel de la Minerve, a 5 Star boutique mansion hotel which overlooks the Pantheon and is just minutes from Piazza Navona, the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps. For mid-range hotels, Hotel Borromeo is a popular hotel within walking distance from Termini Station along the main Via Cavour. Most hotels offer free breakfast and internet, but please note breakfast in Italy is simple pastries and coffee, sorry no eggs and bacon here.

Getting Around

One of the first things you will notice is that Rome is a walking town and learning the public transportation is key. There are only two metro lines that connect the city which passes around the downtown area. Buses are more convenient with stops throughout the city center and are widely used by locals and tourists. To cut down cost, purchase a 24 or 48-hour pass which works for unlimited rides on the metro and buses.

TIP: Try walking to each landmark with short stops in between. One of my most memorable trips in Rome was a midnight tour which we strolled by the major landmarks like Piazza Navona, Trevi Fountain and the Pantheon, and saw a different view of the city without of the packed tourists and cramp space.

Things to do

Vatican Museum and St. Peter’s Basilica – The highlight of your trip to Rome will always be the Vatican and you should make sure to properly plan your visit. Pre-purchase your tour tickets for entrances and an escorted tour guide into the Vatican Museum to avoid long lines and queues. Last time I went, the waiting for to enter without reservations was 2+ hours. TIP: When choosing your entry time, choose an afternoon slot when the lines are shorter and less people waiting. Morning tours are always packed from 9am until 1pm.

Trevi Fountain – The Fontana di Trevi – or Trevi Fountain in English -is the largest Baroque fountain in the city and the most beautiful in the world. A traditional legend holds that if visitors throw a coin into the fountain, they are ensured a return to Rome. Don’t forget to visit Bar Trevi across from the fountain which have some of the best gelato in Rome.

The Pantheon – Only a few steps away, is the historic Parthenon, the most preserved and influential building in Rome. Dedicated to the worship of every god (Pan-every Theon-divinity), the Pantheon was built by the Emperor Hadrian between 118 and 125 A.D. Live singers are always close because of the beautiful acoustics around the structure.

More Tips for Travelers

Get the Tourist Card

If you plan to visit a lot of the museums, check out the budget tourist card which allows you entrances to the attractions for one flat fee. The Roma Pass is one of my favorites which also includes transportation on buses and the metro plus additional discounts of tourist services and tickets.

Take a culinary class

Learn how to make pasta the Roman way! Food is an important part of Italian’s life and they spend a lot of their time eating and socializing. If you are a complete foodie like me, you will definitely enjoy a break from the sightseeing and tours. Expect to pay around 25-30 Euros per person depending on the length of the class.

Buy tons of wine

Wine cost as little as 3-4 Euros per bottle almost the same cost as bottled water. Go figure.

Why airlines overbook flights?

It comes to no surprise that the public is at an uproar with the recent United passenger who was removed from a flight due to overbooking. What are your rights as a passenger when it comes to an overbooked flight?

Why do Airlines Overbook flights?

Overbooking is a common practice for airlines designed to ensure every plane departs at full capacity. It may sound counterintuitive, the practice of selling more tickets on an airplane than there are seats benefits both airlines and passengers. Based on years of statistical data and algorithms to compensate for “no-shows”, airlines continue to overbook flights to maximize their profits. It may be a passenger’s worse nightmare however overbooking is a perfectly legal practice. Although overbooking is common, the number of passengers who are denied boarding is small.

While the airlines maximize profits, passengers enjoy an array of flexibility due to overbooking such as moving their travel dates after purchase or in situations when a customer misses their flight, still having an opportunity to arrive at their destination. Overbooking also allows the airlines to keep flight costs low.

Know Your Rights

Although overbooking is legal, as a paying customer you should know your rights if you are ever bumped from your flight. In the event, you are in an overbook flight situation, a gate agent will proactively look for volunteers to move to a later flight often lined with travel vouchers or other types of compensation. Compensation such as free meals, free upgrades or admission into their swanky airport lounges help sweeten the pot too. If the airline cannot clear enough seats, the pay-off will generally increase as the flight nears take-off eventually capping off at $1,350 per person.

Most passenger are unaware that they enter in a legal contract each time they purchase an airline ticket. A passenger’s rights are defined in the Contract of Carriage which clearly outlines the legal expectations of the passenger and the airlines. Under contract each passenger agrees that their flight may be overbooked and can be involuntarily denied boarding based on the airlines discretion only after a reasonable amount of compensation has not been accepted. In an event, there are more passengers than seats, an airline is legally able to involuntarily deny boarding or remove passengers.

What to Do if you are on an Overbooked Flight

If you are sitting at your gate and hear your flight is overbooked you will have to think about which options benefits you the most. You will need to ask yourself how important it is for you to arrive at your destination on how much you are willing to be compensated.

In most cases, there will be enough volunteers who are willing to accept travel vouchers in which you will remain on your flight. If there are not enough volunteers, any passengers who are denied boarding will then be compensated for missing their flight which can constitute a higher pay off.

So which airlines should I take?

GOOD: Hawaiian , Delta and Virgin America
BAD: Alaska, United, Spirit and Frontier
WORSE: American, jetBlue and Southwest

How long can a US Citizens stay in the Philippines?

Whether you need a visa or not to enter the Philippines depends on your intent of your stay and how long you plan to stay there. Since the Philippines continues to maintain diplomatic relations with the US, US citizens may avail themselves of visa-free entry into the Philippines, provided their stay does not exceed 30 days. There are also other factors that plays a part in what type of visa you can apply for, such as marital status. Being married to a Filipino citizen allows you access to other types of visas not offered to others.

Less than a Month

For those US Citizens who plan to travel to the Philippines for less than 30 days, you will not need a visa to enter. Upon entry, you will receive an entry stamp when you arrive at the airport which will also contain the date you must exit the Philippines (30 days from the date of entry). For you to receive a 30-day entry stamp, your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date of departure. In addition, you must also provide a return ticket to the United States or an onward ticket to another country.

Visits over 30 Days

For US Citizens who plan to stay longer in the Philippines for longer than 30 days, a visa must be obtained prior to your arrival. To obtain a tourist visa, you will need to present a copy of your itinerary, hotel reservations, proof of financial capacity (photocopy of latest bank statement and an employment certificate from the employer indicating position and salary, or affidavit of support), and an invitation letter from friends or family members living in the Philippines. If you’re applying for a business visa, you will need a letter from your employer or sponsor. There is a fee to secure your temporary visa – single entry valid for (3) months – $30.00 USD, multiple entry valid for (6) months – $60.00 USD, and multiple entry valid for (12) months – $90 USD.

Immigrant Visas

Immigrant visas are reserved for a foreign national based on their valid marriage to a Philippine citizen and their children under the age of 21. To apply for an Immigrant visa, applicants must submit a medical examination which also include chest x-rays, police record and an in-person interview. In addition, you must also provide documentary evidence of spouse’s Philippine citizenship in form of NSO birth certificate or passport, evidence of financial status such as bank statements, real state or a notarized Affidavit of Support from a relative in the Philippines, with attached documents to substantiate declaration or claim. The current fee for an Immigrant visa is $150 USD which must be paid in cash or money order. Personal checks and credit cards are not accepted.

Balikbayan Program

The Balikbayan Program as instituted by Republic Act 6768 (amended by Republic Act 9174) was launched by the Philippine Government to attract and encourage overseas Filipinos to come and visit their motherland. This is in recognition of their contribution to the economy of the country through the foreign exchange inflow and revenues that they generate. The program allows visa-free entry to the Philippines for a period of one (1) year for foreign passport holders, with the exception of visa-required nationals.

Under the “Balikbayan Program” of the Philippines, the following persons are considered Balikbayans:

a Filipino citizen who has been continuously out of the Philippines for a period of at least one year from the date of last departure;
a Filipino Overseas Worker; and
a former Filipino citizen who had been naturalized in a foreign country and holds a foreign passport (original proof of former Philippine citizenship, such as old Philippine passport, birth certificate, or foreign naturalization papers showing Filipino nationality will be required).

Balikbayans are entitled to the following benefits:

travel tax exemption
visa-free entry to the Philippines for a period of one year from the date of arrival in the Philippines
duty-free shopping privileges up to US$1,500.00

Family members (spouse and children) of a Balikbayan who are holding foreign passports are also entitled to Balikbayan privileges, on the condition that they:

travel with the Balikbayan;
pay any applicable immigration fees; and
observe and comply with immigration rules and regulations.

Balikbayans traveling to the Philippines are advised to declare before the Philippine Immigration Officer at the port of entry that he/she is availing of the privilege and has to present either their old Philippine passport or copy of Philippine birth certificate as proof of their former Philippine citizenship.
Accompanying family members of the balikbayan should bring appropriate supporting documents:
• For the spouse: copy of marriage certificate
• For each child: copy of birth certificate
• For adopted children: copy of adoption papers

Travel now before you miss the golden age of travel

Traveling has become easier for everyone within the last 8 months and the trends continue to show that this is the golden age of travel. With comparisons from year to year, 2017 is set to break record lows in affordability, increase customer satisfaction and consistent on-time departure and arrivals. It doesn’t matter if you are flying domestic or internationally, there has never been a better time to book a trip and escape from your normal routine and experience the world.

Since 1970, after the deregulation of the airline industry, prices for flying has steadily fallen, allowing passengers to enjoy affordable prices to almost anywhere in the world. Economy prices have reached the lowest margin in three years and continue to set records. Last month, United and American Airlines introduced there “basic economy” fares which allow even more reduced rates to compete against ultra-low fare carriers such as Spirit, Frontier and Allegiant.

Even in the international sector, airlines such as Emirates and Etihad Airlines continue to add new routes, connecting more destinations and has allowed easier accessibility with numerous hubs and itineraries to choose from. With a variety of choices, passengers now have a lot more flexibility which will keep prices low.

And lastly, the ease of travel has become even easier with more countries participating in transit programs allowing passengers to avoid purchasing an expensive visa to enter. China now offers a 72-hour visa free transit in eighteen cities for passengers with passports of 51 countries to stay without a visa on direct transit. More and more countries are adopting visa-free policies to increase tourism and drive growth.

Traveling the world can lead to new passions and will broaden a person’s perspective. It is the quickest way to break down perceived barriers between cultures, beliefs and ideas. This year instead of settling for material possessions, budget a trip to explore the world which you can treasure your experience forever.

IN SUMMARY
Korean Airlines economy product is one of the best ways to travel from Washington to Incheon. Pros: Larger seats and aisles to move through, friendly staff and assortment of entertainment. Cons: Pricey compared to other emerging airlines, long layover on the return, always full.

CHECKING IN

Manila International Airport (formerly known as Ninoy Aquino International Airport, NAIA) is the main international gateway for the Philippines and serves about 36 million travelers annually. Manila International is divided into 4 different terminals: Terminals 1 & 3 – International Airlines; Terminal 2 – Domestic flights & Philippine Airlines; Terminal 4 – Local Carriers like AirAsia, TigerAir and Skyjet Airlines. Terminal 1 has 16 gates and serves Emirates Airlines, Etihad Airlines, Korean and Asiana Airlines.

If you do not know, checking in Manila is not an easy task and I would recommend that all passengers make sure to arrive at least 3 hours prior to departure. Terminal 1 is the oldest of the 4 terminals and has gone through a well needed renovation to enhance operations.

When checking in, expect long wait times before obtaining your ticket and proceeding to immigration. Note: Immigration is also a bit slow and the average wait time is about 20 minutes. Make sure to have all your paperwork ready when you step up to the Immigration Officer.

Once you pass the final security check point, you can proceed to your gate.

AT THE GATE

Unlike most international terminals, Terminal 1 in Manila does not offer travelers many options for food and shopping. I found the public areas very dull and not as welcoming and would like to see more in the future. If you want to grab something to eat before your flight, make sure to buy something before you enter the Terminal, as I found two options for food but both were limited to small pastries and snacks.

When you arrive at the gate, there was an airline staff member which will check each passenger as an additional security measure. Although you are free to leave the gate area, you will always need to carry your ticket and passport to re-enter.

THE CABIN

When you board your aircraft, you will be greeted by the friendliest flight attendants who always seem to have a calming smile. The flight staff are very friendly and even offer to assist you with your carry-on luggage. From Manila, Korean Airlines uses the Boeing 777-300 aircraft which has 6 flat bed seats in First Class, 35 lie flat Business/ Prestige Class, and 297 standard economy class seats for a total of 338 total passengers.

As you head towards the Economy Class cabin, you will immediately notice the large aisles that allow passengers to move freely through the airplane.

Passengers with disabilities or the elderly will also truly appreciate the ample space between the rows. Even standing a whopping 5’10, I was able to stretch out my legs and not have to worry about having my knees touch the back of the seat in front of me. Definitely a plus! Korean Airlines also boats some of the widest seats in Economy Class with 18 inches across and a seat pitch of 33-34 degrees (recline).

As you can see, Korean Airlines has 10 inch screens to keep you entertained while on your flight. There is also a convenient USB charging outlet for easy access for your personal electronics and tablets.

Each passenger also receives a Korean Blanket, headphones and slippers. The Korean Airline blankets are the BEST. You are not suppose to take them and is strictly prohibited, however they are very comfy and warm (I have three).

THE FOOD

I absolutely love Korean food however I was not impressed with the food. During each meal service, passengers can choose from a traditional Korean dish or an American style meal. I tried the Bibimbap which was very tasty and filling and also came with kimchi and fruits. Each meal also comes with red plum wine.

This is the American dish, which was also good – Beef Bourguignon.

THE SERVICE

There is a major difference between U.S. based airlines and its competitors in Asia when it comes to service. Flight attendants are some of the most polite and friendliest people I have ever met and are always willing to help when asked upon. The staff onboard are very attentive and even anticipate your needs when they see you are even a little bit uncomfortable. I was even surprised at the immediate response time when I pressed the call button (20 seconds).

Every staff member speaks English well and are very helpful in accommodating your needs. I do have to mention that the service is wonderful however can seem very robotic at times, but nonetheless enjoyable.

OVERALL EXPERIENCE

I am a big fan of Korean Airlines and hope they continue to maintain the of level of standard that most people expect when traveling with them. From the beginning at check-in to the in-flight service, you definitely feel that each staff member loves their job is genuinely pleasant and sincere. The food was good and tasty, however would have loved more snacks to fight off the hunger during the long haul between Incheon and Washington, D.C. Korean Airlines will need to continue to innovate in competition to the Gulf carriers and Chinese carriers which have consistently expanded their operations in Manila.

It’s true that the world of travel is shrouded with uncertainty. No matter how well you plan and prepare, sometimes things change and it can be very frustrating dealing with change fees. On domestic carriers like Delta and American airlines, passengers can pay changes fees at around $200 per ticket and for international flights, it can reach up to $450.

Without knowing the fare rules, you can be at the mercy of the airlines and I would suggest you speak to your travel agent to find out your options. Here are some tips when trying to avoid those fees and saving some serious money.

Free Cancellations – Depending on where you purchase your tickets, you may be able to cancel your ticket out right with no reason at all. Most tickets come with a free cancellation policy in which you cancel with a penalty with 4-24 hours from the time you purchased the ticket. The Best Time to Travel to the Philippines

For many Filipinos, returning to our native homeland has been out of reach because of time and budget, however with the influx of competitive rates, many more Filipinos have been able to fly home more consistently. With the growing number of Asian and Middle Eastern carriers to expand their routes to the Philippines, many players such as Korean Airlines and Delta Airlines have begun to lose their market share which in turn has caused competition and allowed airfare prices to drop. Today, Filipinos can enjoy an assortment of choices to travel to the Philippines and we have benefited with more affordable prices.

Although we are able to select different airlines based on itineraries, service and added benefits, many travelers ask me, “When is it the best time to fly to the Philippines?’. Here are a few tips to consider when planning your next trip.

Low Season

From January to March and also from September to November, you will normally find some of the best deals to Manila from the U.S. Children are in school and the majority of travelers wait until the summer to fly back home. Most of the airlines begin promoting special rates and lower fares to attract passengers to book early. Keep in mind during these months, promotional fares usually run 4-5 days before they expire. Have your tentative dates and be ready to book as soon as these amazing deals begin to run.

High Season

Like many top destinations, the high season for travel is during the summer months between May – August. Most people prefer to travel with their families and wait to travel all together. Usually rates during these months can range between $1,200 – $2,000 per traveler. The demand for flights are high and if you have specific dates, I would recommend booking at least 3-4 months in advance to avoid price hikes. Waiting to purchase your tickets within 2 months will limit your choices and expect to seats to be limited. During the Christmas season, expect even higher prices due to the holidays. If you plan to travel between December 15 to January 15, don’t expect to see any promotions without sacrificing with longer layovers or multiple stops.

Avoiding Holy Week

Consequently to avoid paying higher fares, traveling at the end of March through the beginning of April, specifically around Holy Week is a no-no. Since the Philippines is predominantly a Catholic country and the festivities surrounding this religious time can create a high demand on balikbayans traveling back home. It will be difficult finding affordable prices during the Easter holiday.

Finding fares within your Budget

If you are trying to stay within a certain budget, consider a couple of tips to help you minimize the cost.

Be flexible – Airline prices are based on availability which means that depending on the number seats available on a flight, prices will fluctuate daily. If you do not have a set time to travel, advise your travel agent and they can find the best deals 2-3 days before and after your preferred dates.
Avoid weekends – Leaving on Friday – Sunday may be convenient to maximize your time, but you will end up paying more when leaving on these days. Midweek rates are fare more cheaper especially if you leave/ return on a Tuesday or Wednesday.
Don’t be afraid to try a new airline – With the Manila market exploding with competition, many international carriers are offering lower fares to Manila to gain a piece of the market. These rates are more reasonable and can save you a lot of money. Airlines like Emirates, Etihad, EVA Airways and Air China have some amazing deals while providing superior service.

Crazy things inside people’s carry-ons

As you know the holiday season as upon us all and domestic travel will be on the rise. Luckily for us, and many of you, the TSA blogs about confiscated items that are left behind. While most of us understand between what will pass and what will not, here are a few items collected this month from the TSA. We are so happy that the TSA continues to be diligent in their prevention of dangerous and harmful items from boarding our aircraft.

The Walking Dead’s “Lucille”

Fans of the ever popular “The Walking Dead”, has seen its share of cameos especially since the majority of the scenes are filmed near Atlanta. This replica baseball which is lined with barbed wire (really, its rubber bands and imitation blood) was quickly confiscated at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson Airport (ATL). A very cool gift, however baseball bats are not allowed in the cabin areas and must be stowed in your checked in luggage.

2. Flashlight Dagger

In case you need some help finding where to go, it’s always nice to bring a flashlight, except if it becomes a dangerous dagger! This item was confiscated at Los Angeles (LAX).

3. Machete

Carving a turkey can be very stressful, especially of you don’t have the right utensils. Problem solved – just bring a machete and your golden. Eh! This twelve inch machete was obtained in San Diego (SAN) right after Thanksgiving. We know how important the holidays are, but all knives, including machetes, must be checked into your checked in luggage. Thanks!

4. Flashbang Grenade

This was an interesting item which was obtained by TSA in Kahului (OGG). FYI: Anything that resembles a bomb or grenade is prohibited on both checked in and carry-on bags. Also note that officials will be on high alert which will cause major delays. In some instances a complete shutdown of operations and evacuation may occur.

5. Razor blades in the shoes

Well at least you know why you have to take your shoes off at the checkpoints. This person at Laguardia Airport (LGA) decided to try to sneak on a razor blade in their shoes. Probably would have gone with a different (cleaner) type of shoe, but this is crazy!

Well thankfully, we have the TSA to make sure that our planes are safe from harm. These are just some of the most wildest items to show up on the TSA Blog, however there will be more!

FLIGHT REVIEW: American Airlines (777-300) Economy Class from Dallas to Hong Kong

It can be quite expensive traveling internationally and although we all loathe to spend our hours in First Class, or even Business – the truth of the matter is that most of us will have to settle for Economy Class fares. To be clear, there is nothing wrong with traveling in the Main Cabin, and many airlines have improved amenities, seat size and of course entertainment and food to lure passengers on their planes. On my recent trip to Asia, I decided to try out American Airlines brand new 777-300 and share my reviews with you all.

Since the merger of American Airlines and US Airways, the American Corporation has been quietly improving their airplanes, expanding their destinations, while fine tuning their domestic operations and transitioning into the World’s Largest Airlines. I was very impressed with the new changes and attention that American has concentrated on such as the inflight entertainment, overall flight experience and the quality of food and snacks while in the air.

DALLAS/FORT WORTH (DFW)

Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) is one of American’s busiest hubs in the West with 84 percent from domestic flights and 13 percent coming from international connections to Asia. From Dallas, Fort Worth you could connect on American to Hong Kong, Beijing, Seoul and Japan, however only Hong Kong uses the new 777-300. American flies a non-stop flight from Dallas to Hong

The Boeing 777-300 can hold up to 310 passengers which consists of 8 First Class (flat bed seats), 52 Business Class (flat bed seats), 48 Premium Economy Class (standard) and 202 Main Cabin (standard) seats.

When you first board the plane, you can feel the different atmosphere with contemporary style decor and modern furnishings. As I continued to my seat, I was astonished to find the newly improved and interactive monitor behind every seat. I love catching up on movies and sitcoms, and I already knew this was going to be a pleasant experience. Also, I quickly realize that American had also focused on allowing passengers more options for connectivity with ease to find ac plugs, USB chargers and touchscreen seat functions.

Now the size and width of the seats did not change, however it did feel like there was more space when I sat down. Typically the standard for Main Cabin seating is 32 inched Seat Pitch and 17-18 width, which was the case for this flight.

I also enjoyed the that the menu was given out in the beginning of the flight to give you enough time to think about what you would like to eat. This helps avoid deciding on the spot when the flight attendants are trying hard to serve every person in a timely manner. Did you know that beer and wine is complimentary on international flights? Big thumbs up!

As each person situated themselves in their seat, there was more than enough overhead space for carry-ons and backpacks, I even noticed a few bins which were empty. The flight attendants were quick to prepare the flight for departure and within 10 minutes from boarding we were already in the air to Hong Kong.

INFLIGHT EXPERIENCE

Once we were at cruising speed, I was excited to see if the service in American also improved. US Carriers have not scored as high as international carriers such as Korean Air or All Nippon, however American has mentioned that they aim to change their consumer perception. Beverages and drinks came out within 45 minutes from our departure and I would be able to enjoy a nice cold drink while watching a movie.

One of the biggest changes to the inflight entertainment was the huge screen and selection of movies and TV shows. I was in awe on the amount of time I could keep occupied with over 300 movies (50 being newly released) and then over 300 channels of television shows. You were able to rewind, fast forward and save selections for later in the flight. Even the games that were loaded on the system were entertaining for 10 minutes or so.

Did you have a playlist that you want to listen to? Well you can even connect your smart device and play pre-loaded playlists to the system. Now that’cool!

Now for those who need the Internet, well – American Airlines has an option for you! Inflight Wi-Fi throughout the entire flight. To purchase Wifi, it costs $19.95 for the entire flightv (14hours) and the connection speed was pretty good. I was able to play an online game and make a Wifi call from my cellphone. Who would have thought Iw ould be able to make a call at 50,000 feet!

This made a BIG DIFFERENCE!

Throughout the flight, I did deal with very understanding flight attendants, however I was not blown away with their service and attention to detail. I still feel that Asian carriers have an advantage when it comes to being proactive. I was satisfied and this by far was one of my better experiences on American Airlines.

FINAL REVIEW

American Airlines has made some major changes to its place int he airline world especially for those who plan to fly internationally. These new planes with major advancements in functionality and atmosphere has been a big eye opener and will attract more passengers to consider flying on American. Although changes have been made in the equipment, American Airlines and the other US Carriers will need to improve on their overall customer service. Friendliness and sincerity are expected, but if American wants to compete internationally, they will need to learn to do more and exceed expectations.

5 ways to save money on your next cruise

Cruising has gain popularity amongst travelers with its “all-inclusive” pricing. With transportation, lodging, food and an assortment of activities and entertainment already included on cruises today, how do some cruisers end up breaking the bank with that final bill at the end of the cruise?

Although cruises pricing includes so many amenities, not everything is included and if you don’t plan properly or get advice from your travel agent, you may end up dipping into your savings and spending more than you initial budgeted.

As a responsible travel agent (and friend), I encourage everyone to drop the soft drinks and stick to water, juice and tea. It’s very hard to get off the sugary drinks especially with so much energy you get after consumption, but not only will your health appreciate it, but also your wallet. But what about bottled water, most beverage packages include getting premium bottled water as well? TIP #1: Drinking water on a cruise ship is extremely safe. The water is filtered on the ship itself and is regularly checked to meet sanitation regulations. The (free) drinking water is more likely better and cleaner than that of the bottled water they are selling to you.

Cruise lines make a killing when it comes to this add-on because honestly what’s a few dollars compared to your comfort. Well, A LOT! Most beverage packages begin at $8-$10 dollar per person per day, which at first glance seems small but when you calculate the cost for say a 7 day cruise, it’s $56-$70 per person (for two people $112-$140). Again, I may not have the same passion for soft drinks, but I can’t imagine the need to spend that much on pop. I mean a 2-liter bottle is about $1.99 at home, so one person will practically need to drink 10-12 bottles of soft drinks throughout the cruise to even make it comparable.

Now what what about the alcoholic packages that offer free beer & wine, and even premium liquor. Okay, the lure of being able to buy unlimited drinks has its appeal, but honestly you would have to drink about 4-5 drinks a day to make it worth your time. Remember, you will not be on the ship the entire time and you will have access to go onshore and drink there, where most of the time it will be cheaper.

If you need to some liquid courage, check the daily guides for drink specials and you can save a lot of money. TIP#2: Remember your bartenders name and make sure you tip them big in the beginning. For me, I always tip when I am ordering to make sure they bartender knows that I am going to hook them up. You remember their name, they will remember you when it comes to cashing out.

IMPORTANT : Never skimp on the tip – I completely understand the need to save money, however you pay for what you get and if you are not willing to give them an extra something, I really doubt you will get anything extra from the staff.

In this day in age, the need to be online and post your pictures on Facebook is as important as brushing your teeth, however internet on board cruise ships are horrible and simply not worth your money. Cruise lines use satellite’s to connect to the internet which often lead to long waits and interrupted service, however you pay per minute which is often around $0.65 per minute. You can purchase package with up to 500 minutes but it will cost you about $200 for that. TIP#3: Most cruise ports offer free Wi-fi and if they don’t, just find a local shop once onshore and buy a drink and they will be happy to let you jump on their signal.

Just avoid the Casino

If casinos were in the business to help people, this headliner would change immediately, but we all know the house always win. Casinos onboard cruise ships are most likely filled with smokers who enjoy the luxury of smoking inside and of course another way to throw your money down the drain. Again, if you have a need to gamble and that is y our way of having fun, just be mindful of how much you spend. It’s not like Vegas, where you get free drinks if you play, it’s just a nicer way to give your money to the cruise line.

Specialty Restaurants

Unless your celebrating a special occasion like a birthday or anniversary, try to limit the amount of times you dine at one of these premium venues. Included in your cruise fare is a wide range of food throughout the ship which include the buffet, room service and of course the main dining which is available during breakfast, lunch and dinner. T IP #4: If you need to make reservations for a specialty restaurant, then I suggest making on the first day. Most cruise ships like to fill their restaurants immediately and will offer 20%-50% off if you purchase it you plan which night you want to dine. However, if you plan on going on a Celebrity Ship, I would highly recommend Qsine. This is a fabulous restaurant and experience. Completely worth it!

Spa treatments onboard can be very costly and can easily skyrocket that final bill. Make sure to budget what services you plan on taking by asking your travel agent for the spa prices (you should only be asking me). Here is a sample of prices to get you prepared:

Facials range between $100 – $300
Massages range between $125 – $200
Women’s Haircuts range between $70 – $150
Men’s Haircuts range between $30 – $65
Manicures range between $40 – $90
Pedicures range between $70 – $120

Tip #5: To save money on spa treatments, make sure to book your reservation during shore days. When everyone leaves the ship, the spas usually run specials to entice those who plan on staying onboard.

Welcome A380 to Washington!

Today I witnessed an amazing marvel, and unbelievable accomplishment and honestly a masterpiece that I cannot deny. A work of art that I cannot wait to experience and boast about, the NEW EMIRATES A380!

My sister and I were fortunate to be invited to this VIP Event (thanks, Barry & Zeenat!) and witness the unveiling of Emirates flagship aircraft which will have daily service from Washington, D.C – Dulles (IAD) to Dubai. I have been a major advocate for Emirates with my own personal experiences, however with this new aircraft, I cannot wait to tell each and everyone of my clients that they must experience it firsthand.

Today, travel has been overshadowed by cheap fares, low cost airlines and online travel agencies which fail to provide the two things that this industry first began on – immaculate service and relaxing comfort. Often times, I am bombarded with questions about comparison shopping and add-on charges for overweight or extra baggage, but rarely asked which airlines provides the most comfortable experience. I cannot Fathom (look out for another post!, hint! hint!) being uncomfortable for 3 hours, let alone sitting shoulder to shoulder to someone for 14 hours or more without carefully weighing out my options (How many stopovers? Layover time? Which airport i will be connecting to?). All of these are questions that passengers should ask themselves before considering which airline to use for their travel. Price cannot be the only factor, but if it is – you always get what you pay for!

With that said, I introduce to you the Emirates A380. This newest addition to the Emirates fleet which is a wide body, double decker jet aircraft that is a masterpiece in the sky. Emirates has the most A380s in their fleet with 73 currently operating in cities such as New York, Houston, Los Angeles, San Francisco and now Washington, D.C. With a passenger capacity of 489 people ( 14 closed suites, 76 business class and 399 economy class) you can only imagine the size of this aircraft. Added with Emirates world renowned customer service, I cannot help by recommend this flight.

Economy Class

Want to get the premier seats? If possible try to get row 43 A/B/C, row 43 H/J/K, row 52 A/B/C and row 52 H/J/K. These seats are in the front of the sections and have no seats in front of them. Row 43 is the best option since it also has the second smallest section, which means more quiet and most likely cleaner bathrooms.

Window Seats with Legroom – Both of best worlds!! Try row 68A, 68K, 81A and 81K. These four seats are right in front of the exit rows and have no seats in front of them (shhhhh….. Travelwise secret!!!).

Need elbow room and leg space – Try Row 67 B/C, row 67 J/K, row 80 B/C or row 80 J/K. Since these rows are in front of the Exit Area they do not have a window seat beside them, and only have two seats. Tada!

row 54 D/E/F/G, row 67 D/E/F/G and row 82 D/E/F/G (I would say this would be the best, because it is in a smaller section and less people, hence no so many people waiting for the bathroom). Just ask one of our travel agents to request these kits beforehand, so they can have them ready for you when you board your plane.

Business Class

As you find your way to the rear of the plane, you find a staircase that leads to the Upper

Deck and find my favorite part of the plane – the inflight Bar. This feature is not accessible to Economy class, and you will need to be in First or Business class. Fully stocked with wine, premium spirits and hors d’oeuvrs , imagine sipping on a drink while onboard headed to Dubai. Meet new friends, enjoy delectable canapes and socialize at 45,000 feet. A different way to view the the Mile High Club (pun, intended!).

Champagne? Red or White? Sandwiches? It doesn’t matter when you fly in First or Business Class.

Walk a few feet further and you arrive at the 76 Business Class seats which are probably like First Class seats on any other airlines. Configured in a 1 – 2 – 1 setup, each seat has an 18.5 inch width, 48 inch pitch and converts to a 79 inch flat lie down bed. In addition, each seat has access to an AC Adapter, 2 USB Plugs, an iPad and of course an Amenity kit which includes socks, lotion, toothbrush and toothpaste and other toiletries.

If you are food buff – Emirates does a great job creating gourmet cuisines prepared with locally sourced ingredients from regions they travel to. Mix and match your meals with a carefully selected wine with favorites chosen by their sommelier.

First Class

Vanity mirror with toiletries at your disposal.

Now, I may never experience this extremely luxurious product, however if enough of you read this – hopefully Emirates will allow me to try it – ha ha! Anyways, if you find yourself in need of top notch service and full suite service- you can find it in either one of these 14 First Class Suites. I was highly impressed with the comfort and accessibility of snacks, drinks and of course the comfortable reclining seats. First class seats boasts a seat width of 23 inches and 86 inch seat pitch. Not as large as other airlines, but the one thing that I really loved, was the privacy. You can close the suite off and you can be completely secluded from other passengers. They even have a “Do Not Wake” Feature which lights up to inform the flight attendants to leave you alone.

Although the seats to most would be the talk of the town, the most unexpected highlight of this tour was the bathroom. Yes, I said it the bathroom. The surreal experience is more like a Spa Service. The Spa Room as they call it is larger than my own bathroom and they have two onboard!

With rejuvenating products by Timeless Spas at your disposal you have a choice to “Relax” or “Revive”. These Shower Spas must be booked when onboard to avoid scheduling conflicts, however if there is an open slot, you may use them. They have two Spa Room attendants who are consistently cleaning and restocking the shower spas after each passenger. You are give 5 minutes of water when showering and the pressure is great considering you are on a plane. Even the floors beneath you are heated, crazy, right!

On the commercials, Jennifer Aniston claims she enjoys the Shower Spa Rooms and I now know why!

Final Take:

With the introduction of the new A380 to Washington, D.C, to say I was impressed would be an understatement. The magnificent aircraft will allow more passengers the ability to explore other destinations around the world and connect to via Dubai. With daily service from Dulles, clients of mine will be able to enjoy world-class comfort in any class of service in style and luxury. Beginning in March, Emirates will begin service to Cebu and Clark, Philippines while they continue to grow in the Manila market.

Guide when getting stuck in Japan

On my most recent trip to Manila, I connected through Narita, Japan – the Asian hub for Delta Airlines and world SkyGate for passengers to connect to other destinations in Asia. Traveling internationally is one of the most rewarding experiences which allows you to see first-hand the culture, the people and the history of many countries, however no matter how much you plan, travel is uncertain. Flight delays, cancellations and misconnections can often time lead to frustrations, anxiety and worse a layover not planned in a country you may not be familiar with.

Narita Airport is made up of three terminals and all are accessible by a free shuttle bus on the lower floor once you arrive. Finding your way is easily marked by numbered signs once you exit the terminal, for instance if you arrived in Terminal 1 (Oneworld Alliance) you can proceed to Bus Stop 16, where shuttle buses run every 20 minutes – travel time is about 5 minutes. Terminal 2 is comprised of Star Alliance carriers like JAL, All Nippon Airways, Delta and Lufthansa.

One of the best things to do in Japan is the shopping ! Like most international airports, big brand names fill the concourse with beautiful displays and high-end fashion; however, there are more retail stores throughout the terminal where you can find gifts, souvenirs and other goods that you may not find elsewhere. One of the best features that really stand out and which separates this airport is that the shopping area is outside of the security. If you are stuck and have to stay in Japan longer than expected, you can easily spend a few hours shopping which have stores for everyone. From specialty urban apparel stores like UNIQLO and DesignGraphicTees to more specifics like custom-made stationary sets and cultural stores that offer high quality sake – there is something for everyone. I always find myself shopping in the (find the brand that you lie to shop at). It is easily to find yourself adding more and more bags to your already packed suitcase.

Now if you are stuck overnight in Japan, you do not have to worry about trying to find a comfortable couch to sleep. There are many hotels close by the airport, which you can book directly at the airport. Do not waste your time trying to get online and booking online. It is usually cheaper to book a one-night stay at the Hotel Registration areas on the lower level by the arrival areas. They have negotiated rates for travelers and you can find a hotel for about $50 a night including Wi-Fi. For budget travelers, I would suggest trying Hotel Tobu or Hotel Nikko, which are about 5-10 minutes away and only, cost about $50 a night for a single traveler. Note: There is a big difference in price and the size of room when booking a single or double occupancy room. In addition, all the hotels have a free shuttle bus to and from the airport, just ask the information desk for the schedule of pick up times. Japanese people are very punctual, so the pick-up times are usually on time. In addition to hotels, there are also capsule rooms at the airport, which you can stay in. These rooms are like studio apartments with a bed and access to a shower and bathroom.

Now if you are traveling internationally, it is safe to say that you probably have large suitcases with you and it can be very strenuous carrying them around the terminal.

TRAVEL TIP #2 – Find the luggage storage areas which is a paid a service to store your bags while you go around and explore the airport. They have luggage lockers which you can store one to two luggage for about $5 for 3 hours. You may not want to spend the money, however think about this what is $5 dollars when thinking about how annoying it is to lug around your bags and then to carefully watch them at all times. Do yourself a favor and just throw down some money.

Now if you find yourself adventurous, traveling to Tokyo is only 26 minutes away by high-speed train. This is really a great adventure and is really a great experience. Go downstairs and find the many trains, which are easily accessible for a one-day pass. You can travel throughout Japan on these high-speed trains and make the better of your one night.

TRAVEL TIP # 3 – Make sure to take advantage of the FREE WIFI . The internet in Narita is high speed and you can stream videos and check your Facebook to let your friends and family know you are safe. Remember to preload you phone with apps such as VIBER, Vonage and even use Facebook to call using their VOIP service.

8 Travel tips for International Flights

The actual thought of flying is dreadful! I would never want to sit in a cramp, overcrowded plane with horrible food, unless it was important. No one really loves to fly (except maybe the pilot), but the thought of flying to go somewhere different and new, is what really gets us to take a step on the plane. Now you know my secret! A Travel Agent who does not like to fly, but LOVES TO TRAVEL!

Well with over 15 years of traveling all across the globe, I have a few tips that may help you ditch the fear and thought of flying. Although flying is not my forte – it is really the only way to see the world…

Tip #1: Pack Early

This is the tip that everyone knows, but never follows. We always plan to pack early, but somehow we always find ourselves really wanting to do something else than packing. Honestly, this has saved me in more than a few trips and I suggest instead of planning to pack, just DO IT. Get it over, pack, and never have to worry about it again.

Tip #2: Charge your Batteries

If you are like me, then having a phone is a necessity. When travelling, your phone can be your savior and not having power and searching around for charging stations at every layover is VERY stress-free. Every time I fly, I always make sure to charge every electronic device I plan on bringing. The must have of charging…

Tip #3: Adjust your clock a week before you trip

People tend to forget about jet lag and think that they are not susceptible to its effects. To avoid this, set your clocks to match the time at your destination. This will help you adjust before arriving and allow you to enjoy your vacation from the very start.

Tip #4: Be comfortable but presentable

We are no longer in the Golden Age of travel where suits and dresses fill the seats and the ability to fly was so revered. We now live in the modern age where comfort is key and you must be able to transform outfits as you see fit. Layering is the game and you have to learn how to pack clothes that complement each other. Stick with solid colors and remember to be comfortable, although not too comfortable. Stick those PJs back in the drawer.

It took me a while to give in, but flying to button down and some khakis get me better seats and better service than a t-shirt and jeans. A fact to swallow, but it is what it is. Remember it is hard to take someone seriously when they look like they got dressed in the dark.

Tip #5: Check in the day before or make sure you arrive early

Being able to check in early is such a blessing that people just do not take advantage of. Just login into your airline carriers website and enter in your record locator and you can see a summarize version of your itinerary online. You can check-in, pay for excess baggage, upgrade your seats and obtain your boarding passes (pdf or paper). If you do not find your reservation, at least you have another day to resolve any issues with your ticket.

Also, remember to arrive to an international flight at least 3 hours prior to our departure. Being early is always best to change seats (if available), go through security and not having to worry about speeding to the airport. REMEMBER: International flights close the doors to the aircraft 15 minutes prior to departure. Once the door at the gate has been closed, the agent will not open it for any reason.

Tip #6: H20 To-Go

It is important to keep yourself hydrated on long flights to prevent hunger pains, headaches and bad breath. You can save a lot of money of carrying a bottle of water with you to avoid spending big bucks in the airport on inflated pricing. Hate dumping that bottle at security? Did you know that you could bring an empty water bottle through security and fill it up on the other side? Most airports now have water filling stations that you can fill your bottles with.

Tip #7: Trim down the Carry-On

The most memorable definition of a carry-on was the time when a passenger was stopped at the gate holding an IKEA blue bag (yes, the BLUE bag with straps) as her carry on. Not only did I realize how much I really want an IKEA bag, I also realized how much easier it would be to travel without a carry-on. IDEA!
Lose the carry-on! Well, not completely, but get it down to 10-12 lbs. total. You have to be able to move around quickly but still have enough supplies for a day or two. If you really take advantage of Tip #1, try to consolidate and bring a carry-on that fits underneath the seat in front of you or on top of other bags.

Tip #8: Lounges are the BEST!

Having long layovers and waiting take a toll on you while you travel, but do not worry. You can take advantage of the lounges in international airports to give yourself a break. Yes, the day pass can range between $25-$65 per person; however think about the benefits opposed to the cost.

STAY CONNECTED – With most lunges offering free Wi-Fi in their lounges, you can stay connected with friends and family no matter where you are in the world.

REJUVENATE | RELAX – With the expansion of amenities offered by airlines to premium passengers, lounges have been upgraded to maximize your level of comfort. International lounges have increased their spaces and have included showers and studio type rooms for maximum comfort. Refresh yourself while waiting on those long layovers.
